Lamination: Everything you need to know

Lamination is becoming increasingly popular, especially with major international manufacturers for 3 key reasons: it is an eco-friendlier process than the alternative options, it ensures greater flexibility and can be performed at high output rates.

Our range of solutions for wood or PVC lamination aims at ensuring consistent quality, high efficiency and sustainability. Each line will be configured according to the real needs of our customer and designed to achieve their principal objectives.

What is lamination?

Lamination is a technique used to cover wood-based or PVC panels, extremely common in the furniture manufacturing industry. Lamination embellishes the surface of panels that are made of substrate materials such as chipboard, MDF or plywood, enhancing their appeal and perceived value.

Different types of lamination

Primarily used as a finishing technique for flat panels in derivatives of wood, lamination is also suitable for PVC or aluminium substrates, where an additional processing stage may be necessary. Over and above flat lamination, lamination of panel edges together with the flat surface is also feasible, even J-Pull handles can be processed. The key difference, however, will be in the material used to cover the panel and the glue used to fix the foil to the substrate. Moreover, with Düspohl systems, both panel sides can be laminated in a single pass. If wrapping is integrated on this line, the panel material can be laminated on four sides with a seamless joint, maintaining a compact machine structure.

Laminating machines: applications and materials

Several substrates can be laminated. All types of wood-based materials are embellished with a decorative material, giving them the desired finished effect: from glossy to matt, with patterns or just imitating natural wooden fibres. Metal substrates such as aluminium can be laminated as well as PVC, both of which are common in the furniture sector. Lamination is a technique used for many products: flat panels for cupboard doors, worktops, kitchen cabinet doors, etc.

PVC lamination

We can even talk about PVC profile lamination when it comes to windows. Surfaces that are used externally, such as façades with over one-metre widths, can also be laminated using outdoor-proof PUR adhesives to ensure lasting adhesion. A complete range of solutions has been developed over the years in collaboration with our customers whose needs have helped us optimise key factors:

  • fast, automated set-up procedures for improved productivity
  • energy efficient glue processing for better sustainability
  • superior foil adhesion for lasting quality
  • greater precision and less waste

Advantages of lamination

Lamination is a flexible and highly productive finishing technique that can be used for flat panel surfaces (both sides) as well as their edges. It enables significant variety in terms of the decorative materials that can be paper-based or thermoplastic foils.

Advantages at a glance:

  • Process efficiency
  • Production speeds up to 50 m/min.
  • Eco-friendly, avoiding use of solvents
  • Automatic set-up and process
  • Variety of decorative design and materials

  • PowerWrap Wide 1400S - designed to laminate and wrap single-sided, high-gloss bathroom furniture.
  • PowerWrap Wide 1400DS (double-sided) - completes double lamination in one pass incl. edge wrapping and 0-joint on the bottom side in double width.
  • PowerWrap Wide 1400S - built to laminate 3 mm. thin panels with paper and thermoplastic foils and high-gloss as well, for the caravan industry.
  • The MultiWrap Wood range consist of:
  • MultiWrap Wood 700S - two interlinked machines with a turning device for processing single-width furniture components.

For the production of parquet flooring, X-Press Parquet 400R is the ideal choice to produce 2 parquet layers at up to 80 m/min.

Flat-Lam 1300R is the solution to laminate wooden doors, door skins with roll material made of CPL, paper, PVC foils, PET foils or PP foils. High-gloss sheet material made of PMMA or acrylic or HPL can also be used. Batch One necessities can also be managed this way.

Why invest in Düspohl lamination systems

As the market moves steadily away from systems that damage the environment, Düspohl has built a range of lamination lines that use eco-friendly hot melt glue application solutions. Düspohl delivers a slot coater solution as well as pre-melters for PUR (Polyurethane), PO (Polyolefin) and EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) adhesives. These units require very little maintenance or spare parts. Moreover, they melt glue on-demand to eliminate waste and feature energy-saving technologies to lower costs and improve sustainability.

Another reason to trust Düspohl is the experience gained in over 50 years spent designing, constructing and optimising lamination lines according to an evolving market. Only Düspohl offers a complete system: glue melting units and application systems, lamination and wrapping machines, automated unwinding systems and automated trimming and cut-off solutions.

The most convincing reason for our success on the market depends not only on the lamination technologies we have developed over time, but on our willingness and ability to understand the specific demands of our customers and respond by tailoring each line to their real needs. A customer’s goals are the backbone of our strategy and you can be sure your line will achieve your objectives.
